What Causes Constant Pressure In Esophagus Region Of The Neck?

Hello, My name is Rodney and I ve been having this problem for maybe a year now, I wouldn t say its a pain but its definitely a constant pressure. I would say its around my esophagus region of the neck. Sometimes it feels like a hands is just pressed down on my neck. Its hard to wear a shirt sometimes, wrapped in a blanket wrong, sometimes it even stops me from sleeping on my chest. I ve been a very athletic person my whole life, never had issues in the past. Its not always uncomfortable but when it is, sometimes it could bother over the top. My parents think it s OCD with my not wanting stuff on my neck, but I can tell its getting worse and worse.. I know I don t have much info on it but I can t tell you exactly what it is.. I m clueless and need help!

Hello,

Let me first summarize your symptoms below:
1) Constant pressure in esophagus region
2) Difficulty in sleeping on your chest

The following are various probable causes of pressure over esophagus area
1) Thyroid swelling
2) Salivary gland swelling
3) Lipoma of skin
4) Thyroglossal cyst
5) Lymphoma
6) Paraganglioma
7) Lymphadenopathy due to bacterial or viral or parasitic causes
8) Branchial cleft cyst
9) Dermoid cyst
10) Vascular anomalies

Please don't get panicked by the long list. I have just mentioned the possibilities both including the rare ones. My advise to a patient who comes with similar complaints to me is as follows:
1) Thorough history taking including any other symptoms like loss of appetite and weight, chronic cough, fever etc.
2) Thorough clinical examination for any swelling on the neck and near lower jaw
3) Only if I find a swelling or suspect anything.

Order investigations like ultrasound of swelling and neck, FNAC etc. You had mentioned about OCD. Actually, it's a psychiatric disorder. If no organic cause be found for your complaints, only then we can start thinking in psychiatry direction. So to rule out all the above mentioned causes, you need to consult your physician and have a thorough clinical evaluation.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
