The commonest cause of constipation can be one of the following: Ones a 10 cm colon is resected the neuro-humoral signals can get altered or lost hence the feces may not progress further as they were before getting accumulated, causing fecolith formation and thus causing difficulty in passing motion. Another reason can be stricture formation at the line of anastomosis. This can be diagnosed by the following: Clinical examination of the abdomen. Barium enema studies to see the changes of stricture formation or recurrence. Colonoscopy can help the best for diagnosis and if needed for biopsy. Once the proper cause is found the treatment becomes easy. Hence if there is stricture formation, the treatment may be dilation with balloon or sticturoplasty. If the cause is fecolith formation then you have to take and try different stool softeners, laxatives, motility enhancers so that the motion is passed properly.
