What Causes Darkening Around Areola During Menstruation?

Hi. I am currently on my period and have been for a few days and my nipples are turning dark brown. Originally there a dark pink. I am very sexually active. What could this be? Could I be pregnant even though I'm on my period. Which btw came earlier this month.
