What Causes Delay In Menstruation Despite Taking Minigynon-21?

H doc. my girl friend and i had unprotected sex april 26. her last cycle was april 1-8. she took 8 minigyon 21 (4 each between 12 hours) as an emergency method. she expected her period on may 2 but 6 days has passed and she hasn t. could she be pregnant? how long should she wait to see her period.

Microgynon contains both ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel that is used in the prevention of unwanted pregnancies from unprotected sexual intercourses. But like other medications this medication has some side effects of its own. One pill every day is recommended to take. Taking more pills than recommended dose can cause raised hormone levels in the blood and cause some adverse effects like changes in the menstrual cycles. It may cause delayed period, missed or absent periods.

It may take time for your girlfriend's natural menstrual cycle to fully re-establish itself. But if your girlfriend don't get back her natural menstrual cycles within few months, then she should consult her doctor for medical help. Again, if your girlfriend has any doubt of getting pregnant, then she can undergo urine for pregnancy test, 7 days after the next missed period.
