Hello,
Thank you for your question. Cytotec is not the first line to treat absent
menstruation. First your doctor should evaluate your cause of absent period. Pregnancy test is the most common cause of absent
amenorrhea. Estimated frequencies of the different causes of secondary amenorrhea include:Hypothalamic 35 percent, Pituitary 17 percent, Ovary 40 percent, Uterus 7 percent and other 1 percent. Other test like
blood test ,
Ultrasound and MRI can be use to make the diagnosis.
The treatment of absent period is depends on what is causing your missed periods, and on whether you want to get pregnant. Possible treatments include: Birth control pills to make period regular, losing weight if you are
overweight, medicines to help you get pregnant if you are having trouble getting pregnant on your own, changing the way you eat and exercise, such as: eating more calories, gaining weight if you weight to little, easing up on exercise, if you exercise a lot, reducing stress, hormones to treat hot flashes ( if you are going through early manopause), medicine to lower prolactin levels ( if your
pituitary gland is making too much prolactin). So you can reduce your chances of missing periods by eating well and staying at a healthy weight. Being too thin or too heavy can cause
irregular periods.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Best regards,
Dr. Heang Chan Raksmey, General and Family Physician.
