General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Ativan is generally used only for a short period of time when it comes to anxiety. It is an addictive drug so it may cause dependence and addiction if used for more than a few weeks.
There are other drugs that are quite effective in treating anxiety and depression but do not cause addiction. These would be SSRI drugs (sertraline, escitalopram, etc).

I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal in case further medical assistance is needed.

Regards,
