What Causes Diarrhea Along With Stomach Cramps And Fatigue In A Child?
my 3 yr old grandson has had severe diarrhea for the last five days, along with stomach cramps and fatigue, no vomiting yet. went to er last night they said they won t know anything till they get results of stool sample and urine sample. It has been almost 24 hours since they took the samples and nobody can tell us anything. He is still sick and I am concerned about how contagious he is because I have a brand new baby and a medically fragile child in the house. What should I do?

If the child had a stool culture and a urine culture then the test results may take 1-3 days to come back. So, this may be the reason why you have not heard as yet from the doctor, even though it is 24 hours from the tests.
Very likely your grandson has viral gastroenteritis, this is contagious but is self-limiting in most of the cases. The results of the stool culture and stool test for ova and parasite are needed to make sure this is not a bacterial infection or a parasite.
Meanwhile, it is important that you keep the child hydrated giving as much oral rehydration solution as possible as these substitute both water and electrolyte loss.
