What Causes Difficulty In Sitting Cross-legged While Suffering From Hypothyroidism?

I am male, 60 years of age, and, a case of Hypothyroidism with erratic TSH levels since last three years. Recently an orthopedic doctor for extreme pain in right foot prescribed calcirol sachets to be taken on alternate days for 10 days plus Vitamin D tabs for 1 month. Now my pain is gone but my both knee joints have grown stiff after treatment. I am an exponent of Yoga practicing since last 40 years and suddenly now I cannot sit cross-legged or perform padma asana. Kindly suggest.

Hello,

You seem to be suffering from osteoarthritis that’s common at your age. Squatting position isn’t good for knee joint. Since you have severe knee pain, it isn’t advisable to attempt squatting and please avoid padmaasan posture.

1) Any NSAID would help reduce your pain like tab. Aceclofenac or tab. Ibuprofen but take it only stat dose when pain is severe.
2)avoid stress on knee joint by not squatting, not sitting on floor, not taking steps, not lifting heavy weights
3) The muscles around knee joint are to be strengthened, so, the following exercise is recommended daily as many times as possible

Sit in a chair, lift the affected leg up to knee level. stay still for few seconds and then come to normal position. this can be repeated as many times as possible in a day.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
