What Causes Difficulty In Sleeping After Mucinex Ds Intake?

I took two Mucinex Ds last night about 10 pm… took care of my congestion very nicely, but I was awake for a good portion of the night. I read several reviews and many people seem to be affected this way. What exactly causes this sleeplessness? Is it dangerous to my health? In other words, am I somehow kind of allergic to this medicine? Or could I use just half doses?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Mucinex D has a decongestant in it (pseudoephedrine), which is also a stimulant, and so it is not unexpected that you would have problems with sleep.

However, its effect will be temporary, and you should not have any problems 24 hours after your last dose, 2-3 days at the longest.

This is not an allergy but is just a side effect of how the medications work on your system to relieve the nasal congestion.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
