What Causes Discharge From Perforated Eardrum Despite Taking Antibiotics?

Perforated eardrum still leaking after antibiotics? I ruptured my eardrum 8 days ago. My doctor prescribed me two types of antibiotics, nasal spray, and and decongestants. My eardrum stopped leaking (this discharge was bloody not yellow) and my other symptoms (sore throat and cough, swollen glands) went down in a few days. However 2 days ago my ear started leaking a little again , but this time a yellow discharge. My glands have also become tender and I have a phlegmy chest again this morning. I have now finished all antibiotics and meds originally prescribed. I am aware that eardrums take a while to heal, but I am worried that the infection may still be lingering?

Hi,

Well, the bloody discharge can be due to traumatic injury to the ear but yellow discharge can be probably due to infection leading to pus discharge.

Also, tender glands and phlegmy chest can be due to infection. So my suggestion is to consult an Otorhinolaryngologist and get evaluated and a clinical examination can be done for confirmation.

The ear can be cleaned followed by another course of antibiotics like Augmentin and anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen. Also, antibiotic ear drops can be advised.
