Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Dizziness, Fainting And Balancing Issues While On Ferrous Sulfate?
I was hospitalized at the beginning of last month with severe anemia and chose not to receive a blood transfusion for religious beliefs. My primary care doctor put me on ferrous sulfate but I am beginning to have the same symptoms, head swimming, feeling faint and dizzy. How can I stop this feeling. I feel like I am going to pass out!
Unfortunately, it takes 2 to 3 months for iron supplements to take effect because this is the time it takes for new blood to be formed. This means that your blood count is likely still low since it was tested only 1 month ago.
You should speak to someone about alternatives eg fractions of red blood cells instead of the whole blood, this is allowed in some cases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
