What Causes Drop In Blood Glucose Levels Despite Taking Glucose?

Hi Dr, my Dr did a blood glucose on me in our general hospital, FPG result 5.7 and 2 hrs later OGTT result 3.7. Well he claim that I vomited, which was not the case neither did drink any water during the 2 hrs. Then send me for second test, 2 weeks later , again FPG 5.6 and OGTT 3.2. He is puzzled and cannot give any answer , just brushing off the question by saying at least we know you are not diabetic. My question is why my glucose level drop so much after consuming the glucose? Thank you.

Hello,

I read your message and understood your problem.

FPG 5.7 is not to worry about because it is normal. OGTT result 3.2-3.7 is a little bit low. This means that hypoglycemia has occurred after eating.

Anyway, your doctor is right, you do not have diabetes. The reason why your blood glucose level decreases after taking glucose (which is the same situation as after eating) is that in your blood there is excessive insulin hormone.

If your diet is very rich in carbs, the pancreas is forced to produce and release more insulin. This release happens even after the glucose taken is digested and causes further reduction in blood glucose levels.

This is called reactive hypoglycemia and it can be manifested in deficiencies of glucagon hormone secretion as well.

My advice is to reduce the carbs from your diet for one day and repeat the glucose test the other day and see the result. If it comes out normal it is just because of your diet. Otherwise, a pancreatic evaluation is needed.

Hope this is helpful.
