Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Dry Mouth And Difficulty In Swallowing Post Dental Work?
My mouth has been extremely dry. I have trouble swallowing; not trouble swallowing food/liquids, just "regular" swallowing. This started after getting dental work about 3 weeks ago for a crown. I had the prep for the crown and permanent crown placed. I am drinking tons of water and have been using biotene moisturizing mouth spray with little relief. Could this just be from the Novocaine or maybe something unrelated to the dental work?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns...
As per your query dry mouth after crown placement is a very rare finding and could be due to allergic reaction to the dental materials. As far as Novocaine injection is concerned if it would be the cause the effect of Novocaine must has worn off long back as it is already three weeks and the dry mouth must have improved by now.. You should consult your treating dentist and get evaluated for other causes of dry mouth like salivary gland disorders, nerve damage etc and treatment can be planned according to the diagnosis.. As of now continue using biotene mouth spray and suck on tart candies and sugar free chewing gums as they help in stimulating saliva flow..
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards.. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora..
