Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Dull Gnawing Pain In The General Epigastric Region?
I'm 29. I do not smoke, drink, or take any NSAIDs/pain killers at all. I have been having dull, gnawing pain in the general epigastric region for the last two months, and was prescribed Nexium for the same. The pain went away after 20 days of medication, but, suddenly, came back three days ago. What diagnostic tests are recommended? Could this be H. Pylori?
Since you smoke, drink and take NSAIDS, your symptoms might be related to all the aggravating factors for stomach hyper acidity and make you more prone to stomach or duodenal ulcer. I would advise you to reduce/complete abstinence from smoking and drinking as well. Stop NSAIDS for a while.
In my opinion you should take Nexium or Ranitidine group of drugs with antacids or Sucralfate syrup to reduce stomach hyper acidity and symptomatic relief. As far as investigations are concerned you can go for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy with biopsy and urea breath test for H pylori. In addition to medicines you should avoid fatty fried spicy and junk food, have lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Hope this answers your question. Please feel free to ask for follow up question and I will gladly answer you.
Best wishes, Dr. B R Hudda
