What Causes Ear Ache?

My ear started hurting about 2 weeks ago, on the outer part, tender, hurt to sleep on, then my glands swelled right below ear, went to doctor got zpak, finished it Saturday, woke up last night and had bad pains that would come an go on same side that the ear that is hurting, has not stopped yet today and I took 800 mg ibuprofen, noticed their must be some drainage in ear because it's a little crusty. It also makes my head hurt when i swallow, have had drainage in throat mostly when laying down for a long while, 6 months or longer.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain severe ear ache along with leaking fluid from ear and crusty ear are indications of ear infection also known as Otitis Externa or Otitis Media depending upon the part of ear involved..

As it is already two weeks and it is leading to headache and also have drainage in throat that can also be a reason for ear infection as the ear and throat are connected via Eustachian tubes..

Therefore,I would suggest you to consult an Otolaryngologist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like otoscopy, x ray, fluid culture etc can help in diagnosis..

He can be advised antibiotic and analgesic ear drops along with oral antibiotics and painkillers and at times manual drainage of ears can also be done for faster recovery..
