What Causes Ear Pain After The Surgery For Eustachian Deformity?

My daughter, who is 34, has been suffering from eustachian deformity since she was a toddler. She was undiagnosed by ears/nose/throat specialists at a very young age and had numerous ear tubes throughout her childhood. As a adult, she was finally diagnosed by the Calif Ear Institute with a deformed eustachian tube and over the last 15 y continued to have tubes put in and some reconstructive surgery. Nearly all of the tubes came out within 6 mths. She still suffers from ear pain and ear drum is eroding away. Is there any treatment or surgery out there that can stop this erosion and heal her of this debilitating condition?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

The patient is a female of 34 suffering from Eustachian tube deformity since childhood, put in numerous ear tubes called grommets which extrude within 6 months, underwent Eustachian tube reconstructive surgery, still suffers from ear pain and ear drum is eroded away.
- The cause is so obvious hence there may be a congenital problem which may not be fully treatable.
- The cause must be evaluated further for ear pain.
HR-CT that is high resolution CT scan of mastoids/ears will help to know the status of mastoid air cells and will tell if mastoid surgery is needed or not.
- Audiometry.
- Any other relevant tests of blood and urine.
Once a proper diagnosis has been made, it will give both a way to treat further and prognosis as to how much improvement can be done.
- If the mastoid cavity is normal then a perforated ear drum is actually working as aeration of middle ear cavity hence the insufficiency of Eustachian tube does not cause much problem.
Most of the surgical procedures for Eustachian tubes are not much effective hence wait till proper evaluation and medical management shows the results.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
