What Causes Earache After Recovering From A Respiratory Tract Infection?

I ve had an upper respiratory infection for nearly a month. I relapsed today with nasty earache and, um, color, to be really gross. My dr. Prescribed 5 prednisone tablets, twice daily augmentin, and cough syrup. Being a microbiologist, I now admit I should have gone earlier, but I was traveling and the plane trips did a number on my ear. I juiced, took all my vitamins, ate a lot of veggies and tried to get 8 hrs of sleep. This was pretty impossible, given my inability to breathe thru my nose, and coughing waking me up all night. I used a Neti pot twice a day, too, for the last week. Any other suggestions? I ve been under a lot of stress with a divorce after 40 year marriage due to money worries. I m usually very healthy but t can t seem to kick this. Never had anything for this long. Can stress be a factor in this? I m very active. I have 6 horses and walk my 12 acres daily with my German shepherd, as well as riding a stationary bike 30 minutes a day 5 days a week.

Hi,

To answer your first question, the respiratory tract is not only the lungs and trachea but also the nose, throat, larynx and ears (specifically the middle ear). All these structures are lined by the same or similar cells (cylindrical epithelium pseudostratified with goblet cells), so all respiratory routes are considered. So, it is very common for a person who suffers from the throat, have manifestations in ears, since there is great communication between all these structures.

When you talk about the color of urine, if it would be quite important to obtain more characteristics of this urine (color, odor, dysuria, back pain or abdominal pain), since it could guide me to a specific urinary infection or a possible complication of your upper respiratory process. Also, I see that you are a person who crosses certain concerns at the moment, that really affects your physical health and delays the healing process.

If I were your doctor, I would examine you again and take samples of your sputum (in case there was no improvement since the first time) to place a more specific treatment against the microorganism that causes your disease.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
