What Causes Elevated BP After Taking Acetaminophen And Phenylephrine?
I have high blood pressure 170 / 110 today. I have a cold & took some relief caps of acetaminophen & phenylephrine earlier today. I think that s what spiked my Blood pressure. Can i now safely take a dore of ZzzQuil, w/ diphenhydramine before I retire for the evening ??
Phenylephrine is an alfa-1 adrenergic receptor agonist commonly used as a nasal decongestant for the symptomatic relief of nasal or sinus congestion associated with cold.
It also acts on peripheral blood vessels to cause vasoconstriction (shrink blood vessels) thereby increasing both systolic and diastolic blood pressure which seems to happened in your case.
Stop taking Phenylephrine and visit your doctor to check your BP again.
ZzzQuil (Diphenhydramine) which is an anti-histamine may be taken for the symptomatic relief of cold. However, it may cause drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, blurred vision, dry mouth, or increased heart beats.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
