my blood pressure has been up for the last couple of weeks, but over the past week in the 160 s and 170 s with bottom number climbing from the 80 s to 93. taking 160 mg of valsarten and a doctor from our clinic added Amlodipine Besylate 2.5mg. Just took again 171/93. Back of neck sore and feeling anxious..I had my second IVIG appt. last Tuesday. I have CLL...Could these be a side effects?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
IVIG may sometimes increase the blood pressure. In most cases it causes a drop in blood pressure though... One of the commonest side effects (perhaps the commonest) is headache. Sometimes it causes both headache and fever resembling meningitis. Therefore this 'back of neck' pain can be attributed to IVIG. Blood pressure usually rises when the patient feels significant pain or discomfort, so this abrupt rise may be a consequence of the pain which probably is a consequence IVIG administration. Therefore the worsening of hypertension may be directly or indirectly related to IVIG. You will find out soon though, as the effects of IVIG wear off after a few days. If your blood pressure returns to the usual levels then IVIG was probably the cause. Otherwise your doctor may order some tests to see if something else is wrong. We usually check the serum electrolytes, renal vasculature and sometimes certain hormonal factors to exclude secondary hypertension - you should talk with your doctor about that if the high readings persist.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
