The condition is called renal artery stenosis. The underlying causes of blockage of the renal arteries could be atherosclerosis where cholesterol gets deposited in the vessel wall and narrows it. However in young patients it could be caused by fibro muscular dysplasia in which the cells in the vessel walls grow abnormally. The blood flow to kidneys reduces and sensing low blood pressure the kidneys secrete hormones to raise blood pressure.
