What Causes Elevated Blood Pressure Levels?

I am female, 65 yrs old, 180 lbs, 5 4 and my blood pressure has been elevating lately. It is running 158/78 and it is the top number that raises and lowers. I am not on any meds at this time. Have never been on blood pressure meds. Should I take medication for this? I am in the process of reducing my weight, which is much needed.

Hi,

With age blood pressure often increases. However, your systolic pressure is more than normal and it needs to be addressed.

There may be many causes for that and you need to see a physician for that. However, there are preventive measures which are more effective in controlling it. These are:
- Reduce consumption of oils and salts in diet, use spices in food like garlic and take fruits like bananas.
- Salt is the most problematic thing in blood pressure, if you can control its consumption it will alone help a lot.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
