Hello,
first of all, tell your mother that she has nothing to worry about unless she has an
aneurysm or advanced
heart failure.
High blood pressure is detrimental to the cardiovascular system but we shouldn't worry about short-term elevations. We do care about adjusting the blood pressure in the long-term though.
The first thing to do is to identify potential causes for the high blood pressure which may include symptoms like pain, too much salt in her diet, psychological
stress, drugs, etc. If her doctor can identify a factor that may have triggered this blood pressure elevation then the factor will have to be dealt with.
Otherwise, measuring the blood pressure at least twice a day with appropriate equipment and measurement procedure would be necessary to assess her situation. If she does have high blood pressure then adjusting her treatment should help. For example, adding a
diuretic (unless contraindicated) or increasing the dosage of the current drugs would be a reasonable next step in such a patient. Please keep in mind that her doctor should approve any change in her medications.
I hope I've answered your question. Please let me know if you need further assistance.
Kind Regards,
Dr Panagiotis Zografakis,
