What Causes Episodes Of Abdominal Pain Followed By Diarrhea And Nausea?

My 42 yo son has had 3 episodes, each at least 1 year apart, that begin with sudden diarrhea and then intense stomachs pain that he states is his “ whole stomach”. He also vomits with the pain. Eventually he goes to the ER because of the pain and is treated with phenergan and this time morphine, as well as iIV fluids. Each time the pain has abated after about 2 hours and then he feels ok other than fatigue from the vomiting YYYY@YYYY

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Your son needs thorough assessment as the symptoms you are describing point towards a diagnosis of irritable bowel syndrome. You need to get him checked by a gastroenterologist.

If the diagnosis is confirmed then he may have to take long-term treatment for the same. He may also advise him to undergo a colonoscopy. Meanwhile, he should refrain from taking spicy and oily food.

Take a high fibre diet and drink lots of water. Tell him to avoid gluten.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
