Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Episodes Of Lightheadedness And Sense Of Weird Smell?
I am not sure. Here is what has been happening: Getting ready for work, sitting on the couch applying make up, lightheadedness hits, start taking in deep breaths, slow and steady and then a smell hits me. Don t know what the smell is. But everytime I have one of my spells I always get a whiff of something.
Episodes of a strange smell are called phantosmia. This can be caused by migraine (preceding an episode of migraine), allergic rhinitis and nasal polyps, or by neurological conditions such as seizure, head trauma, tumor, Parkinson, schizophrenia, etc.
You will need a visit with your doctor, including a neurological exam, to determine the exact cause of the smell sensations you are having and the proper management.
I hope this answers your query. I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
