What Causes Excessive Burping While Treating Acid Reflux?

My 14 year old daughter with intellectual disabilities is burping a LOT. oftentimes, 5 or 6 times in a row. She has acid reflux and takes 27 mg of omeprazole each morning. She is also sticking her hand down her mouth trying to gag herself. I have a call into her pediatrician, but have not heard back yet. My daughter is unable to communicate how she is feeling. Thank you

Hi Dear ,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have excessive burping while treating acid reflux which is mainly due to production of acid/ bile and accumulation of gas due to too much swallowed air, which cause releasing the air to reduce the distention of the stomach due to burping . I would suggest you to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. You should take few preventive measures such as keep bed raised on bed side. Avoid large meal. You should take small but frequent meals. Avoid taking stress. Avoid pulses, chocolates, fatty food from diet. Take pro-kinetics such as Domperidon.Take antacids such as omeprazole after meals. If symptoms keeps on persisting, visit Gastroenterologist once for evaluation and start treatment as per diagnosis. Your symptoms will resolve. Avoid hot, sharp spicy foods as it will leads to excessive acid production. Take diet rich in soft, plain and fiber rich food.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
