What Causes Excessive Vaginal Bleeding?

Hi, I was hospitalized last Thursday for excessive vaginal bleeding. When I say excessive it was like my water broke but it was all blood. I was passing large blood clots. It doesn t seem like menstrual bleeding either. I was held at the hospital for 3 days. I had a d & c done early Friday morning where it took almost 2 hours and didn t get completed because the doctor couldn t stop my bleeding. I then had to have a blood transfusion and IV. He put a balloon catheter in me and then took it out by 5mg per hour then he was confident that I could go home. I was prescribed birth control pills to regulate the minimal bleeding that was still occurring. I had previously been on the pill and it seemed to make my bleeding worse I told him this. I have been on it for 4 days and the bleeding has gotten worse along with awful cramping. I want a second opinion and have made a doctors appt with someone else but I just want your opinion

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for asking. I understand your concern.
Uncontrolled bleeding can be diagnosed by Endometrial biopsy( must have been done during surgery )/ Hysteroscopy .
The possible causes are-
- Hormonal imbalance ( mostly corrected by oral contraceptives- in your case it has not./ progesterone only pills/ IUD/ implants/injections
- Uterine fibroid, polyps.
-Thyroid problem
- Pelvic inflammation
- Endometrial / cervical cancer
Thanks.
I find this answer helpful
