What Causes Excessive Weight Gain During Menopause?

Hi I am a 53 year old female going through menopause, in the last year I have gained 7 kilos, my skin feels so tight like my extra weight has nowhere to go and this limits my arm and leg movement. This has become worse each month and now I am exhausted and moving in slow motion. Every joint hurts and I have reflux.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Ma'am
I share your concern.

Weight gain might be related to sedentary lifestyle, thyroid disorders, diabetes or many other metabolic disorders.

At the outset I would advise you for a battery of investigation like CBC, ESR, Liver function test, blood sugar, Thyroid function test, kidney function test and an ultrasound abdomen to find out any organic cause for weight gain.

Since you have also complaints of joint pain and reflux so I would advise you for X-ray of the affected joint and RA factor test or an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy for reflux if need be.

I would advise you for dietary restrictions and regular physical exercise to loose weight until you get all the reports.
For joint pain you can take glucosamine tablet with analgesic like diclofenac or acetaminophen group of drugs.
You should eat small and frequent meals, avoid skipping mean as well as overeating.
You should not have fatty fried spicy and junk food and carbonated beverages.

Hope this answers your question please feel free to ask for follow up question I will gladly answer you.
Best wishes
