What Causes Extreme Fluctuations In BP Levels While On Atenolol?

Thank you. I have taken atenolol for over a year with great results. The past 5 days my bp has spiked from about 110-120 over 70-80 to 135-150 over 90-100 or so. Also feeling really racey if that makes sense. I will let my Dr. know but right now, I m on vacation. Thanks

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, atenolol slows down the heart to help to control blood pressure but is not a very efficient blood pressure medication.

It's more convenient to switch to ACE inhibitors like lisinopril or calcium channel blockers etc but if heart is racy, atenolol can be used along.

A baseline EKG must be sought for any abnormalities in heart rate and ryhtym. If so, may need to have a detailed cardiac evaluation and centrally acting beta blockers alongwith blood pressure medication. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Regards
