What Causes Facial Spasms And Hand Tremors?

hi doctor. 2 months ago (june 2011) i did some rigorous exercises for 3 consecutive nights. i haven t had any warm-ups during those times. the next day when i was checking my face in the mirror and tried to blink, i suddenly noticed a facial spasm. i went to a neurologist and told me that i m fine and prescribed me Clonazepam, however, during her assessment on me, she noticed that i have slight hand tremors so the doctor referred me to an endocrinologist because of the possibility of hyperthyroidism. i have undergone all tests (electrolytes, TSH, T3, and T4 - my results were all normal) needed and i was negative for hyperthyroidism. i went to two doctors already, and they told me that its all just stress-related. my question is... it has almost been 3 months already and i m still experiencing those facial spasms and those slight hand tremors. also, my throat feels kinda tight. my facial spasms only occur when i trigger them, but when i don t... they really don t appear at all. my hand tremors aren t really disturbing, but i still worry about them too. what could be my problem? is this a lifetime predicament? could it be a neurological disorder or something?

Hi,

There are many types of tremors and each has its differential diagnosis. For example, resting tremor only when you are not moving, action tremor only when you are moving and essential tremor. There is a test for the frequency of tremor that can be done by your neurologist. If the frequency is in a certain range that could also rule out certain disease such as Parkinson's disease.

However, since you visited several doctors with your issue and based on your medical history I agree with the assessment of the doctors you visited before me as It is probably stress related. Try to avoid caffeine for couple of months. No coffee, no soda beverages with caffeine in it. Stick to healthy diet. Do some light workout like walking.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
