What Causes Fecal Impaction?

I am a 65 yr old female. Yesterday and today, I had trouble moving my bowels. Both times, the waste would not fall from my body and I had to remove it manually, after it just hung there. Today, when it happened, and I removed it, it looked similar to what prayer beads look like - pieces being held together by string. This has never happened before. Any ideas?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Fecal impaction can be caused by many reasons. It can be side effects of medications, insufficient nutrition, and mental stress.

Some pieces of advice that I can give to you are:
1) Stay hydrated
2) Eat fruit and vegetables
3) Use enema: This is a small, fluid-filled bottle with a nozzle attached. The nozzle is designed to fit into the rectum. When you squeeze the bottle, a warm mineral oil releases into the rectum and colon to moisten the feces, making it easier to move.
4) Use oral laxatives

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi
