What Causes Fever Along With Swelling Behind The Ear Of A Child?

My 5yr old son feel off a rock 2 days ago, hitting his head on the way down. He got a large knot on the side of his head & swelling being his ear. He cried, then continued normal behavior. Now he has a 101° fever. He rarely gets sick. Could this be related to the head injury?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, it is possible that the fever and swelling behind the ear are related to the head injury. It is important to have your son evaluated by a medical professional as soon as possible to rule out any serious injury or infection. They may recommend imaging tests, such as a CT scan, to check for any internal damage. In the meantime, you can give your son Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen to help reduce his fever and make him more comfortable.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
