What Causes Fixed Pupils When On Induced Coma In A Child Suffering From Down Syndromme?

my 5 year old granddaughter has down syndrome and then got diagnosed with acute lyblasic leukemia. she developed an infection and has been put into a medically induced coma (has a ventilator) her pupils do not dilate. Does that mean there is brain damage?

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCMQ

I am deeply sorry for your granddaughter.

Her symptoms seem to be relate to a deep brain damage, maybe an ischemic stroke or brain hemorrhage, caused by the leukemia.

Another cause of unresponsive pupils would be a high dose of opioids ( which may be part of the therapy to induce coma).

I recommend performing a brain MRI, to make this differential diagnosis between the above mentioned causes.

Hope to have been of help!

Best wishes,

Dr. Iliri
