What Causes Fluctuating Blood Pressure Levels?

I had my blood pressure checked today. For 10 years, it was controlled by Lotrel 5/20. A month ago, the systolic pressure was 160. Today, one nurse took my pressure and the systolic was 137. Ten minutes later, the nurse practitioner took it and the systolic was 170. She waited five minutes and took it again. This time it was 160. Why is it erratic? The only other symptom is bloodshot eyes.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Some blood pressure variation is not uncommon. Our blood pressure do get up and down with our body activities. It also rises with fear and anxiety and also exertion.

However, your blood pressure readings are not well controlled. I would like you to talk to your doctor. We generally do a few tests like electrolytes and an ECG.

Once that are normal, you may need an ambulatory blood pressure monitor. It is a device that would check your blood pressure all the time and would give us an average.

To put it short, the variation itself is not that worrisome but the readings are elevated.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman
