What Causes Fluctuations In BP Level Despite Taking Arginine Pills?

Hello - I am a 69 year old male that has recently developed high blood pressure. I have purchased a good monitor and have recorded level of 169/109 a day ago that was able to be brought down to as low as 118/88 by taking repeated doses of L-Arginine tablets. I was symptomatic having a pressure headache with pulsations. My pulse was in the mid 70 s in the higher pressure ranges but increased as my pressure lowered. Of course I have a more extensive history than this but I am interested in your view of a couple medications that might be considered initially. My primary care provider is a Nurse Practitioner with an Internal Medicine specialty that has been in practice for around six months.

Hi and welcome to HCM.
I'm Dr. Taimur and I will be addressing your health concerns.
I have read your question and understand your concern.

L arginine you mentioned is primarily used for Heart diseases ( it decreases the blood clots and increases the blood supply to heart) but as an anti hypertensive it is not the preferred treatment for sure.
In my patients with the Blood pressure of 170 by 110 and above 50,55 years of age I start them on Calcium channel blockers with an ARB ( angiotensin receptor blocker) and it has shown promising results with the reduction in overall morbidity and mortality.
My recommendation to you is to get an appointment with an Internist and get yourself properly examined and investigated and treated.
Meanwhile you can reduce the salt intake and start regular aerobic exercise.

I hope this might be of some help, if you have any query feel free to ask me any time.
Thanks.
Dr. Taimur
