What Causes Fluid Around The Heart Of A 92 Year Old?
My 92 year old mother recently (36 days ago) had an aortic valve replacement. She came through the surgery but developed complications later and remains in hospital. 4 days ago she was put on life support after she developed fluid around her heart and her heart rate increased to dangerous levels. MRI shows there is no damage to the brain however attempts to bring her out have not been successful. Is there a point where Drs feel that being in this state becomes a danger to her recovery?
I am sorry to hear about your mother. What you are describing pericardial effusion around your mothers heart which is a frequent complication following open heart surgery. The pressure from the fluid around her heart may interfere circulation of blood from the heart. You also describe coma in your mother after surgery. Only time will tell if she wakes from such an ordeal. Your doctors will need to keep you informed to her condition and counsel you on proper course of action.
I hope things go well for you and your mother
