What Causes Fluid Retention In Legs And Weight Gain While On TPN?

I am receiving tpn. My weight is usually 125 pounds. I've been on tpn for 8 days and my thighs have a significant amount of fluid//swelling in them. My weight has increased from 125 pounds to 137 pounds within 8 days. Is this normal? Any suggestions?

HI

Thanks for posting your query.

First of all swelling signifies that the protein content in your TPN is inadequate for you or you are losing protein from your body rapidly.
The other possible cause of swelling is deterioration in your kidney function.
To know the cause I advise you to get Serum Albumin and Serum Creatinine test done . This will tell us whether it is the kidney or the protein that is causing your swelling .

Next your weight gain is either due to extra calories being given through your TPN or due to your physical inactivity or due to fluid accumulation.

I advise you to ask your doctor for prescription of a diuretic, This will reduce your swelling and weight . Then let me know the results of the tests advised .

Any clarifications feel free to ask.

Regards.
