What Causes Frequent Bowel Movement And Abdominal Bloating?

Thank you. My husband has had what I call short gut or dumping syndrome because he has loose stools about 5x/day. He recently had a very bad incident of gastritis where nothing would stay in for about 5 days and his stomach was hard and bloated . He has recurrences where he can t leave the bathroom for hours. What do you think it is?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

For acute relief do following:

- Start ORS solution (oral rehydration salt - WHO approved).
-Drink frequently or on required basis.
-Give curd or butter milk with light and easy to digest foods.
-Give pomegranate or banana.
-If loose stools are not associated with fever and other problems you can give tablet Loperamide 2 mg single dose to stop diarrhea.

For further evaluation:

As problem is chronic you have to take him to surgeon or gastroenterologist to rule out pathology of GI track.

I suspect possibly irritable bowel syndrome but you have to rule out other causes before stamping it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Hiren Hirpara
