Hello,
Diarrhea is defined as 3 or more bowel movements in a day. There are different possible causes of persistent/
chronic diarrhea. The most common causes are:
(1) Irritable bowel syndrome
(2) Side effect of medication -- should look at any medications being used
(3) Infection -- a stool analysis would need to be sent to the lab
(4) Diabetes -- this affects the bowel and can cause diarrhea in some people
(5)
Thyroid disease -- high levels of thyroid hormone can cause diarrhea. A
blood test for both the thyroid levels and to check for diabetes may be needed.
(6)
Inflammatory bowel disease -- conditions such as Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis
(7)
Food allergy or intolerance
She needs to be reassessed to find the cause, she may need to see a gastroenterologist. This is a doctor that specializes in the GI tract.
