What Causes Frequent Diarrhea?

My grandma is suffering frequent loose motions. Age: +68 years. What to do relating with this. Please suggest. Have already seen several doctors, seems like antibiotics aren t the solutions at this age. Weight is little heavy for this age. And Haemoglobin level is also have reduced significantly over this span of 1 year. The complaints about loose motion arose 5-6 months back, since then we ve been seeing several domain veterans. But the issue has not been precisely addressed by any doctor in the region. I request you to please consult us regarding further treatment plan and the medications.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Diarrhea is defined as 3 or more bowel movements in a day. There are different possible causes of persistent/chronic diarrhea. The most common causes are:
(1) Irritable bowel syndrome

(2) Side effect of medication -- should look at any medications being used

(3) Infection -- a stool analysis would need to be sent to the lab

(4) Diabetes -- this affects the bowel and can cause diarrhea in some people

(5) Thyroid disease -- high levels of thyroid hormone can cause diarrhea. A blood test for both the thyroid levels and to check for diabetes may be needed.

(6) Inflammatory bowel disease -- conditions such as Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis

(7) Food allergy or intolerance

She needs to be reassessed to find the cause, she may need to see a gastroenterologist. This is a doctor that specializes in the GI tract.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James
