Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 6 month old grandson is breastfeed and does have bottles of breastmilk, also. Recently he has had green, watery stools. Pretty much diarrhea. The pediatrician said to give it 2 weeks. It s been about that now, and his stools still haven t changed. He has at least 2 or 3 of these a day. Seems to have plenty of wet diapers, though. My daughter said he did have a cold before these started, but that has cleared up. He also had immunizations about 9 days ago, but the green diapers had already started. The breast pumping supplies are washed thoroughly, but not sterilized. The bottles and accessories are run through the dishwasher. Any ideas on why the green diapers?
Your doctor may want to consider a stool sample to the lab if an infection is present and if so to determine the source (bacteria or virus involved).
The brown color of stool is due to changes that occur in the bile . Bile is normally present in stools, as the stool passes through the colon the bile undergoes changes from green to brown causing the stool to change color.
When stool is passed frequently the bile does not have the time to undergo its normal changes so the stool is green.
Since the problem is persisting , he should be reassessed.
I hope this helps
