What Causes Headaches After A Head Injury?

My son,who is 11, had a fall, hit his head by his vp shunt. We visited the ER right away. After MRI, and shunt series X-ray it was determined he was fine. That was on Sunday, starting Monday he has been complaining of a headache and now has a fever of 100.2 under his arm. Should I return to the ER?

Hi. It was reassuring that your son had a full cohort of investigations which were all ok at the time off his injury, given the presence of a VP shunt. However, what worries me is that he now has a low-grade fever along with his headaches. Fevers in children are very common. However, with his shunt I would want to be cautious and you should visit your nearest Emergency Department in order to exclude any cerebral infection to account for his symptoms. You will need to treat his fever in the meantime with paracetamol in accordance with his age/weight as per the instructions on the packaging.
