What Causes Heat Sensations In Face And Upper Chest After A Cortisone Shot?

I have red color to face, cheeks and upper chest which is hot to touch, I had a cortisone shot in left knee three days ago and took two Percocet that night with no problems until 24 hours later, would this be related or something else. It looks like sunburn but have not been outdoors much since than.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted your short history of development of redness on face, upper chest and cheeks after taking a cortisone shot in left knee 3 days ago and 2 tablets of Percocet 24 hours ago.
Since there is a gap of one to three days of taking medications and development of symptoms it is difficult to pinpoint the cause and there are other reasons of such symptoms too.
Cortisone itself is a steroid and helps in control of any allergic reaction, although in your case it is given in the knee hence the systemic manifestations would be low.
It is the preservative in the injection that can cause such problems, Percocet too can cause such symptoms.
The medical dictum is that anything under the sun including the sun can cause allergy hence it is the keen observation by you that may help to find the cause.
Once the cause is found it has to be avoided lifelong.
Anyway, the treatment with antihistamine and oral steroids needs to be started after consulting your Doctor for clinical evaluation, examination and investigations if needed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
