General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

In the years close to the menopause, (45 years of age onwards) heavy periods are usually a sign of hormone imbalance. However, the possibility of heavy periods being caused by fibroid, endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease and most commonly dysfunctional uterine bleeding should be ruled out.

As your mother is experiencing heavy and irregular periods and if these are interfering with her quality of life, then she should consult a GP or gynecologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
