What Causes High BP, Swollen Ankles And Numbness In The Fingers And Toes?

I am a 50 yr old female, I have never had high blood pressure but I have been having some swelling in my ankles and numbness in my finger and toes especially. I checked my blood pressure at the store and it said 153/93 am I just having a bad day or should I see a doctor?

Hi there,

Could just be a bad day, but if you're a 50 year old female and been having some swelling, it could be due to your body going through some changes. Difficult to say if these changes are due to menopause, and some women do complain of increased swelling after menopause due to hormonal changes. 153/93 isn't necessarily alarmingly high, but it isn't normal either.

If you're 50 years old and don't have a doctor, I'd recommend seeing one. You're getting to the age where you should have a regular doctor visit (at least every 2 years). You should also have a colonoscopy at age 50 in order to screen for colon cancer.

I'd take your elevated blood pressure and swelling as a sign that it's time to get a doctor. I'd try to find someone you really like and see him regularly. A good doctor can be a good advocate for you and help guide you through the recommendations that are needed as you age. I'd recommend against going to an urgent care or an ER.

I hope I have answered your question. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions or if you feel I haven't adequately answered your question.
