What Causes High Cholesterol?

I am a 52 year old white female. My total cholesterol is 213. My HDL is 102, triglycerides 78, and LDL 95. While I am glad that my HDL is high...it means that my overall cholesterol is high which prevents my insurance company from giving an annual discount on cost. What are your thoughts? Is my cholesterol really high?

Hello! What a great profile! Your doctor will not write you a lipid interpretation to send to the insurance company? Your LDL is under 100, a goal for cardiologists. Your HDL is the highest I have seen and the emphasis is no longer on total cholesterol. Tell the insurance company to read the guidelines from Jan. 2014 and revise their policies on evidence based medicine and to justify to you and your physician why you should not have insurance based on clinical evidence and recommendations. Stand your ground. Insurance companies should revise their policies to coincide with the literature and Guidelines (most current). Go Girl! Kathy Shattler, MS,RDN
