I inhaled the smoke of a burning poison ivy plant last sunday,by today it got so bad that Iwent to the er. In er my bp was 143/91 and pulse rate 111-115. I rcvd a breathing treatment, and two prednisones. My head was in ezcrutiating pain the walk to the xar and the ride home.My last labs(notffrom tonight BTW) had a high hemocrit and low Bun. I venever found out why they were that but wonder how long my body can react this way to bronchospasm before causing other damage?

Hello,

Inhalation of burned poison ivy smoke is very dangerous. Symptoms are as follows:
1) Respiratory difficulty
2) Fever
3) Rash
4) Cardiac arrest may also occur leading to death

My suggestions are as follows:
1) Stay close to hospital as it may get worsened any time
2) Have an inhaler containing steroids and bronchodilators to relieve bronchospasm
3) The recovery period will be about 1 or 2 weeks
4) Most important are respiratory symptoms. If necessary take supplemental oxygen if your saturation drops below 94%.
5) Rash if appears apply calamine lotion. If it is severe, you may need anti histaminic medications orally.

Visit your doctor if you have the following:
1) Severe breathlessness
2) Pus oozing blisters on skin
3) Very high grade fever
4) Chest pain and severe palpitations

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
