What Causes High Prolactin Level In An Unpregnant Woman?
I have to follow up with OB GYN next wednesday. They stated that my prolactin level is high, thyroid results normal and blood pregnancy test negative. I am not taking any medications. What could cause this if I am not pregnant and thyroid reults normal??
Hi, Thanks for your question. Prolactin is not produced by thyroid, & its increase is not related to pregnancy. Rather an increased prolactin can cause absent periods & sub-fertility. Most common cause is its increased production by pituitary gland. There may be a small tumor there. Usually this can be treated with medicine alone. If increase is slight, stress may have a role. Take care.
