Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Increased Sedimentation Rate While On Prednisone For PMR?
I have PMR for 7 years and can t get my sedrate to stay at a normal rate 0-20. my treatment is 10 mg. prednisone daily and for the past year my new dr. has put me on methotrexate . currently i m taking 8 tablets x 2.5mg once a week. to my disappointment my latest sedrate is at 31. my e-mail address is YYYY@YYYY .
I can understand your concern for the raised ESR. A raised ESR is suggestive of chronic inflammatory process.
A raised ER while taking Methtrexate (weekly once) and daily once Prednisone could be due to inadequate response to the treatment for Polymyalgia rheumatica. It can also be raised due to co-existent conditions like anemia, thyroid disease, infections like tuberculosis, other auto immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, etc.
I advise you to consult your treating rheumatologist for further evaluation and to conduct certain tests such as CBC, Kidney function tests, CRP, Chest Xray, Rh factor,& Antinuclear antibodies to rule out any secondary cause.
Hope this will help.
