What Causes Infection Around The Nail?

I had a culture of an infection around the nail of my second finger. It came back showing that it is Klesbsiella oxytoc. I've been reading on line and am very concerned that this infection will respond to treatment. I was prescribed a site specific antibiotic, cefuroxime. I would appreciate your comments. Thank you, Cheril

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that you are suffering from Paronychia that is infecion in the skin around the nail and as you have culture showing Klesbisella it shows that you have a bacterial infection..

For treating bacterial nail infection you can be advised to apply a combination of antibiotic and steroid ointment over the infected area after cleaning with antiseptic solution..
In case if infection is severe oral antibiotics can be advised..
The medication advised to you is an appropriate antibiotic and if the infection does not subside with site specific antibiotic then you should consult your treating physician so that he can advise you to take oral antibiotics..

You should also avoid wearing shoes till it heals..
You should keep the area dry and clean..
Soak the feet in Epson salt solution..
Avoid hitting the feet to void further injury that can exaggerate the infection..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
