What Causes Intense Chest Pain And Breathlessness After Running?
15 year old female distance runner. Ran a 5k around 5 pm, had sub from subway around 7:45 pm. By 10 pm she was in extreme pain. She indicated that she could not get a good breathe as felt like someone was crushing her ribs causing more pain where the ribcage meets in front and upwards in that area. We went to the ER and attending nurse seemed concerned but the Dr just said that it was nothing to worry about and to take ibeprophen for the pain.. My question is there cause for concern?
I agree with the doctor that, based on your description, this sounds like costochondritis, which would be one of the most common causes of chest pain in a 15-year-old.
It is typically in the front chest area as you described, and can make it hard to take deep breaths and is often painful when you press on that area.
The treatment is typically anti-inflammatories such as Ibuprofen. Sometimes it is caused by viruses but oftentimes a cause isn't found. Recovery may take several weeks but she should recover completely.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Aaron Branch, General & Family Physician
