What Causes Irritability And Aggressive Behavior Before Menstruation?

Hi, I m a 37 year old female and I suffer more panic, depression, irritability and anger before my period. This can last into 1-2 days into my period. After my period is over I feel great and much calmer, I think clearer and feel almost confident to do things that I wouldnt do before my period. A few days after my period I feel kind of normal, not depressed, not elated but just mu general anxiety about the every day life. What could this be and is this normal? Could it be hormones?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Changes in the mood, that precede the periods are mostly related to hormonal changes typical of this time. This is called premenstrual syndrome.
If the symptoms are too intense and affecting your daily activities, treatment may be tried with supplements like magnesium, vitamin B6 and calcium. Cutting back on caffeine, alcohol and smoking is advisable as well.
Being active regularly (exercising) and going for walks and having quality times with family and friends might prove beneficial.

If symptoms do not improve with these measures, then you will need to see your doctor.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,

Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician.
